It looks as if Herm Edwards may indeed be the new man leading the charge in Tempe for the Sun Devils.

As this absolutely insane college football coaching carousel continues along as the season comes to a close, quite the eye-opening report hit the public on Tuesday evening. That report was that there was a new leading candidate for the open Arizona State Sun Devils position — former NFL head coach and current ESPN NFL analyst Herm Edwards. This was later confirmed by Edwards, and he will be meeting with officials this weekend.

Some figured that surely Arizona State would not hire someone who has not coached in college since he was an assistant at San Jose State in 1989, right? It looks good to interview someone with that sort of NFL experience, to a point, but this wasn’t seriously being considered, was it?

Apparently, this is a lot more real than most thought it was. It’s so real, in fact, that it looks as if Edwards will be the next head coach of the Arizona State football program. According to a report from Sun Devil Source of the 247 Sports network, Edwards will be accepting the position, probably sometime this weekend when he does meet with folks in Tempe. At this point in the process, all that needs to be done to get the deal in place officially is a sign-off from the university president, Dr. Michael Crow.

Of course, anything can happen when it comes to college football coaching hires that are close to set — just ask Tennessee about that — but it sure seems like the man who once all reminded us that you play to win the game will be heading back to the college ranks for the first time since 1989. And, this will be his first foray back into the head coaching ranks at any level in nine years, which makes things all the more interesting.

Again, this could fall apart in some form or fashion in the next few days, but for now, this seems like a move that will be happening sooner rather than later.
