NFL Draft 2018: Top 32 draft prospects entering Championship Weekend
After missing the first series of the game against West Virginia for his conduct the week before, Baker Mayfield came in and lit things up. The quarterback was incredibly efficient as he marches toward the Heisman Trophy.
At this point, Mayfield has to be the runaway winner for the Heisman. His team is in strong contention for a playoff spot and there’s a very real chance that they are going to be one of the four teams in so long as they beat TCU this week.
Mayfield was 14/17 for 281 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. He’s a maximum effort type of player and he fits the mold of where the NFL is heading with the quarterback position these days.
Quarterbacks that can show mobility are a must. Offensive linemen take a little longer to adjust and develop at the next level, so it’s important for quarterbacks to be able to make decisions on the move. Mayfield is going to be an intriguing option among the quarterback choices.
SMU had been reeling in the loss column with three straight but they ended the season on a high note with a victory over Tulane. Again, Courtland Sutton was a monster in the receiving game as well.
He finished the game with six catches for 107 yards. He finishes the regular season with 62 catches for 1,017 yards and 12 touchdowns. Now, the Mustangs will await to see which bowl they’ll be invited to.
Sutton’s numbers are impressive considering he was the focal point of every defense’s game plan. With the big frame and ability to go up and get any football, Sutton’s one of the best weapons from a non-major program.
He’s not going to get as much recognition nationally as the other big names, but he’s just as good. He has No. 1 potential written all over him and now another big season to his credit. His improvement over the year being the guy was certainly noticeable. He had a rough stretch where his numbers weren’t jumping off the page, but once he kicked it into gear there was no slowing him down.
