NFL roundup: Eli Manning benched by Giants, Geno to start
By Brad Weiss
Eli Manning has been a constant in the New York Giants lineup since the 2004 NFL season, but he now heads to the bench in favor of Geno Smith.
Since the 2004 NFL season, Eli Manning has been the starting quarterback for the New York Giants. Not only has he been the starter, but he has not missed a start, starting 210 consecutive games, and winning two Super Bowls. On Tuesday, that run came to an end, as the team named Geno Smith their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. Needless to say, it was a truly mind-boggling move by beleaguered head coach Ben McAdoo and staff.
Staying with starting quarterbacks, it looks like it is finally Jimmy G time in San Francisco. Jimmy Garoppolo will make his first start for the 49ers this weekend against the Chicago Bears, in a game that will feature two young, but inexperienced starters. Garoppolo was traded to the 49ers for a draft pick right before the trade deadline, and the team is hoping they can sign him to a long-term deal in the offseason.
During the Oakland Raiders home game against the Denver Broncos, Raiders wideout Michael Crabtree and Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib got in a very embarrassing fight. Both players were ejected, and on Monday, they were suspended for two games. They both appealed the suspension, which was cut to one game, so they will be eligible to return in Week 14. The fight was a carryover from their dust-up during Week 17 of the 2016 NFL season.
In case you were wondering, USC quarterback Sam Darnold will not stay in school just to avoid playing for the Cleveland Browns. That has long been the speculation, as he has not declared for the 2018 NFL Draft, but he put those rumors to rest on Tuesday. Darnold and his USC teammates will take on the Stanford Cardinal in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Friday, with hopes of still making it to the College Football Playoff.

After ten NFL season, running back Darren McFadden has decided to retire. The former Oakland Raiders first round draft pick has been inactive this season for the Dallas Cowboys, who lost starting running back Ezekiel Elliott to suspension. McFadden showed signs of brillance during his NFL career, but injuries and ineffective play really stopped him from ever reaching his true potential after an incredible collegiate career at Arkansas.
