30 most shocking moments in college football history
21. Michael Dyer isn’t called down in BCS Title Game
Auburn’s victory in the 2011 National Championship Game came down to a matter of inches on one of the most bizarre plays ever in college football.
Behind 50 touchdowns from Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, the Tigers rolled into the national championship tilt with a perfect record of 14-0, including an improbable 24-point comeback at Alabama in the Iron Bowl. Auburn figured to get a challenge against Oregon, as Chip Kelly’s team racked up 47 points per game during its 12-1 campaign.
The game was played within one score throughout, with the Tigers maintaining a 19-11 lead for most of the second half. A LaMichael James touchdown catch and Oregon two-point conversion tied the game at 19 left, setting up Auburn with 2:33 to go.
On first down from the 40-yard line, Tigers running back Michael Dyer appeared to be spun down by Eddie Pleasant but rolled over on top of him without ever hitting the ground. Every player on both teams stopped for a moment despite no while blowing, allowing Dyer to run down the field for a 37-yard completion.
That put the Tigers in range for West Byrum’s short game-winner as time expired for the program’s first recognized national championship since 1957. Many fans maintain that Dyer’s leg hit the ground, and the fact that no ref blew a whistle is one of the most shocking moments in championship game history.
