Agents of SHIELD is back for its fifth season, which is set in space. Here’s what to expect from the two-hour season premiere.
It’s a shame that Agents of SHIELD doesn’t receive the praise or the ratings that it deserves. Of course, ABC moving it to Friday nights doesn’t help that cause, but it’s become one of the few major network shows that are still worth watching. Not only is it the best Marvel TV series, it’s consistently pushing the boundaries of what a superhero show can be.
Season 4 of Agents of SHIELD was its most daring one yet. While most of the marketing was designed to promote Ghost Rider, he ended up playing a minor role. The season was split into three arcs, with the main villain being Holden Radcliffe and his android AIDA. The final arc, which envisioned an alternate universe where the characters’ biggest regrets are eliminated, was nothing short of a masterpiece.
While it may seem hard to top that, the writers are determined to do so by setting season 5 out in space and bringing back the Kree. Here’s the synopsis for “Orientation,” according to TV Guide:
"In the Season 5 premiere, Coulson and the team find themselves stranded on a mysterious ship in outer space."
While you would expect “Orientation” to be the name of a series premiere, season 5 is, in a way, a reboot of the entire series. By setting the season in outer space, it’ll be hard to find much in the way of continuity from the past seasons.

Hardcore Marvel fans believe the outer space setting is a way for the show to introduce SWORD, but that remains to be seen. Given that the show always finds a crossover with the Marvel films, this season could also serve as a tie-in to Infinity War, since it’s the next major film in the MCU.
Seeing Agents of SHIELD take such an ambitious step in its fifth season is a breath of fresh air. Let’s all hope the premiere lives up to the hype.
