Jimbo Fisher coaching FSU in final weekend may be a terrible idea

Jimbo Fisher says that he will coach Florida State in its final game this weekend, and that may be a horrible idea.
It’s widely expected that sometime in the near future, current Florida State Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher will be named the next head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies. While the prevalent story within the college football coaching carousel right now is the debacle happening down in Knoxville with the Tennessee Volunteers and their search, without question Fisher making a move to College Station is second on most people’s radar.
Now, to say things have been a little awkward throughout the whole Fisher-A&M-FSU saga would be an enormous understatement. Fisher has been ducking and dodging every question about the potential relocation, and on Wednesday night, a devoted FSU fan was kicked out of his weekly call-in show for questioning his loyalty to the program as he dances around everything.
Well, things will get a tad more awkward this weekend. As this ongoing saga continues on, Fisher told the media on Thursday night that he will coach the Seminoles in their final game of the regular season this coming Saturday. Florida State will take on Louisiana Monroe in a rescheduled game as they try to keep their infamous bowl streak alive.
This could very well end up being a terrible idea of epic proportions.
Sure, Fisher has been tied to other jobs in the past — most notably LSU and Texas — but this time around just feels different. By all accounts, while nothing is set in stone officially, everyone is getting the feeling that Fisher heading to College Station is a matter of when not if. Most are of the belief that if Fisher was definitively staying in Tallahassee, then he would have come out by now and stated as much. Instead, it appears he’s just simply buying his own personal time as some things get ironed out on both sides.
With this, the Florida State fanbase has become understandably annoyed. While they surely appreciate Fisher and what he has done for the program, especially winning a national championship in 2013 following an undefeated season, they would like to know their own fate and the fate of their beloved Seminoles football program. What little love they had for Fisher has slowly faded as this process has played out over the past week.
If Fisher is indeed bolting for the SEC and the Aggies, then something needs to be said between now and Saturday. If the ‘Noles were playing for something bigger than just a sixth win on the year, then you could make the case for him being out there with the team.
But, Fisher being out there in Doak Campbell Stadium just for Florida State to complete one of the most disappointing regular seasons in recent memory — they were a popular preseason pick for the College Football Playoff before Deondre Francois went down with injury against Alabama — would be seen as a slap in the face of the FSU faithful, most of whom are just ready to welcome in their new leader already.
Now, if Fisher doesn’t leave for Texas A&M … well, then, the discussion of Fisher’s relationship with the fans gets a little more interesting heading into next season.
