Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle: Premier League highlights and recap
Chelsea beat Newcastle 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Dec. 2. Here are all the highlights from the Premier League match.
Chelsea beat Newcastle 3-1 in their Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The visitors took the lead, somewhat against the run of play, through Dwight Gayle in the 12th minute, but the Blues responded impressively, and two goals from Eden Hazard either side of an Alvaro Morata header led them to a comfortable win.
Gayle’s goal wasn’t pretty, but it was reward for some decent presing work by the away side. Chelsea missed several good opportunities to clear the ball, culminating in a poor touch by Marco Alonso that almost allowed Jabo Murphy a shot at goal. Thibaut Courtois was quick off his line to thwart that attempt, but Gayle finished easily on the follow up.
Chelsea responded well, however, and perhaps should have had a penalty in the 19th minute, when Karl Darlow appeared to come through the back of Morata to win the ball. The Blues, undeterred, equalized two minutes later, volleying in the rebound after Ciaran Clark failed to properly clear Cesar Azpilicueta’s excellent cross.
The Blues continued to dominate following their equalizer and took the lead in the 33rd minute through Alvaro Morata. The Spaniard, who appeared to push Chancel Mbemba in the buildup, headed in at the back post following a wonderful drilled cross from Victor Moses, making his return to the starting XI after a seven week absence.
Newcastle improved marginally in the second half, but Chelsea created by far the better chances, Morata firing over from close range shortly after the restart and Hazard causing the Magpies defense problems throughout. Hazard secured the win from the spot after Matt Ritchie fouled Moses in the 73rd minute.
