It appears as if Scott Frost will indeed be the new head coach of the Nebraska football program, but it wasn’t as much of a lock as some thought it was.

Throughout this insane college football coaching carousel that we’ve been witnessing this past week, maybe the worst kept secret was that UCF head coach Scott Frost was heading home to take over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He knew 100 percent in his mind that he was going back to his alma mater and they knew they were getting the man they wanted. It was pretty simple.

Well, as it turns out, it may not have been as simple as everyone thought it was.

According to a report from Brett McMurphy, right as UCF and Frost are playing for the AAC championship, the two sides have agreed on a deal to bring the former Huskers quarterback back home to lead the program. However, Nebraska apparently almost saw its worst nightmare come to fruition. Just this past week, before ultimately agreeing to the deal, Frost was having some second thoughts about taking the job, it seems.

So, Nebraska will get the man that they want and Frost will take his dream job, but boy, that almost blew up right in the face of the Cornhuskers. While everyone who’s needed a coach has been scrambling around for interviews, Nebraska has just been sitting back waiting for Frost to finish up his incredible season with UCF. It could have been a disaster if they weren’t able to get the deal done.

There’s no telling what gave Frost the second thoughts, but two things you could think off right off the bat is either staying at UCF or a potential Oregon opening. Willie Taggart is currently the top candidate for the open Florida State Seminoles job following the departure of Jimbo Fisher to the Texas A&M Aggies, and it used to be no secret that Frost wanted to follow in the footsteps of Chip Kelly as the leader of the Ducks.

But, none of it really matters because Frost is headed home to Lincoln to see if he can revive the Huskers just like he did the Knights the past two seasons.
