After 14 games, Bournemouth and Southampton are both in the bottom half of the table. Southampton are 11th, two points ahead of 15th place Bournemouth. On Wednesday, Bournemouth lost 2-1 to Burnley, while Southampton also lost 2-1 against Manchester City after Raheem Sterling scored in the 95th minute.
Bournemouth’s loss to Burnley ended the Cherries three-game unbeaten run. Prior to the loss, Eddie Howe’s side had picked up seven points and kept three consecutive clean sheets. Defensively, only six teams have allowed fewer goals than the Cherries. However, Bournemouth have struggled to score this season, finding the back of the net only 12 times, the fifth fewest in the Premier League. Joshua King scored the lone goal against Burnley but has had a very slow start after scoring 16 goals last year.
The Saints have struggled lately, dropping three of their previous four games, only beating Everton over that stretch of play. Mauricio Pellegrino’s team are in the middle of the pack in both goals for and goals against. Again, the Saints look like a middle table team that has no chance of qualifying for Europe or being relegated. Pellegrino has rotated strikers throughout the season, with Manolo Gabbiadini, Shane Long, and Charlie Austin splitting minutes. While Gabbiadini and Austin are tied with Steven Davis for the team lead with three goals, Long is still looking for his first goal despite playing the most minutes of the trio.
