The top four teams in the College Football Playoff are set, and we’re ready to crown a national champion.

After what was a rather eventful college football season once again, it’s now time to find out who will be playing for the national championship. With all of the conference title games taking place this weekend, Sunday brought us the final edition of the College Football Playoff rankings.

Now, while the top three teams were set coming out of Saturday, the big debate was who would be in the No. 4 slot. Would it be the Ohio State Buckeyes, who captured the Big Ten Championship on Saturday with a win over Wisconsin? Or, would it be a team that did not play on Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide, who only had one loss on the season?

Fans were anxiously awaiting the announcement on Sunday, and the results are in. Here is a look at how the top 4 of the final College Football Playoff rankings shook out.

  1. Clemson
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Georgia
  4. Alabama

So after all of that debate, the College Football Playoff committee gave the nod to Alabama for that final slot. While Ohio State did have the conference title to boast, they did have two losses on the year, with one of those losses being a rather embarrassing blowout at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes, a 7-5 team. In the end, the committee just wasn’t as impressed with the Buckeyes as they were the Tide.

Now, the College Football Playoff stage is set. In the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day, we will get Clemson-Alabama III. This time the showdown isn’t for the national championship, but we’ve learned it’s always an event when these two teams get together on the field. This time around should be no different.

And in the Rose Bowl, we get an intriguing matchup between Oklahoma and Georgia. This one will pit the ferocious defense of the Bulldogs against the explosive offense of the Sooners, led by Baker Mayfield, who should be carrying around a Heisman Trophy by that time.

On paper, this looks like it has the potential to be one of the best College Football Playoff editions that we have seen in its short history.
