The New York Giants are reportedly willing to fire head coach Ben McAdoo if things don’t go well with Geno Smith against the Oakland Raiders.

New York might finally be ready to accept what is all but an inevitability. The Giants, according to both Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter of ESPN, are considering firing head coach Ben McAdoo over the next 24 hours.

McAdoo is in the midst of a pathetic season with the Giants. New York is 2-9 and taking on the Raiders in Oakland on Sunday, playing for nothing but pride and draft position. Earlier this week, McAdoo made the shocking decision to bench Eli Manning, who hasn’t missed a start since 2004, in favor of backup quarterback Geno Smith.

Smith, who is a free agent at the end of the year, has largely been atrocious as an NFL quarterback. Originally selected 39th overall by the New York Jets in the 2013 NFL Draft, Smith has thrown 28 touchdowns against the 36 interceptions. Somehow, McAdoo believes this is the right guy to start over Manning, who while declining at age 36, still has two Super Bowl rings and a plethora of experience.

The move would have made some sense if the Giants turned the offense over to rookie Davis Webb, a third round pick out of the University of California. Webb was thought by some to be an early second-day pick, but slid to the bottom of the third. New York could at least sell the idea that its testing the waters with Webb to figure out if it needs to select a franchise quarterback in the upcoming draft. Instead, McAdoo went with Smith, and now his job depends on him. Good luck with that.
