With Scott Frost gone, the UCF job is now open. A report on Sunday suggests they are looking to find someone quickly. UCF is reportedly in discussion with former Texas A&M coach, Kevin Sumlin.

Scott Frost’s departure to Nebraska from UCF has opened up the Knights job. UCF has done pretty well for themselves in the past 10 years or so, so the job certainly has its luxuries. A report on Sunday suggests that the Knights are targeting a big name in the coaching pool. Ryan Bass, Sports Director at CBS Tampa, reported Sunday morning that UCF is in discussions with Kevin Sumlin, the former head coach for the Texas A&M Aggies.

In a lot of ways, this makes sense for both parties. UCF’s hire of Frost suggested they wanted someone to give a jolt to its offense. Frost did exactly that in his short time in Orlando. They ranked first in the country in 2017 with 48.3 points per game, a huge jump from 28.8 in 2016. Sumlin’s offenses have typically produced powerful potency when they’re running on all cylinders. At times he struggled in the SEC, but his direction and concepts are what matter here.

It makes sense for Sumlin in a lot of ways, too. Going to UCF would give him the opportunity to reestablish himself. The expectations in Orlando are far less than the ones in College Station. Sumlin will certainly not have to deal with the ravenous Aggie boosters that he had to deal with for the last six seasons. Things will be much calmer in Orlando. Even after a year in which the Knights went 12-0 and have 13-0 in their grasp.

With the coaching pool the way it is, hiring Kevin Sumlin would be one of the best possible moves for UCF as it looks to move on from the short Scott Frost Era. So, let’s see if the Knights can make this happen.
