Barcelona enter their final Champions League group stage game with their spot in the round of 16 already guaranteed. Regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s games, Barcelona have won their group. Sporting are third in the group, one point behind Juventus. If Sporting are going to advance to the round of 16 they need to beat Barcelona and have Olympiacos take points from Juventus.
Barcelona defeated Sporting in the reverse fixture, thanks to an own goal from Sebastian Coates. Despite their reputation, Barcelona have been far from dominating in the group stage, scoring only seven goals and settling for a scoreless draw against Olympiacos in their last game. However, with the group already wrapped up, manager Ernesto Valverde might be conservated with his lineup and give younger players more opportunities.
Sporting have not lost a game domestically this season, winning 11 of 14 games. Jorge Jesus’s club need a win to advance and will likely try feeding target man Bas Dost. The Dutch striker has scored 14 goals in all competitions to lead all Sporting players. However, if Sporting are going to be able to get the ball to Dost they will have to win possession from ball dominant Barcelona. Midfielder William Carvalho will have to have a strong game in the middle of the field, winning possession back and pushing the ball forward.
