When does the Champions League round of 16 begin?

With the group stage wrapping up this week, here is when the Champions League round of 16 starts.

The Champions League group stage wraps up on Wednesday, Dec. 6. After the eight games on Wednesday are finished, the teams in the round of 16 will be determined and seeded. On Monday, Dec. 11, UEFA will draw matchups for the round of 16 at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. With the first leg of the round of 16 starting on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

The eight teams that win their group will be seeded in the draw, while the eight runners-up will be unseeded. Group winners cannot be drawn against the team that finished second in their group or another team from their domestic league. For example, Tottenham cannot be drawn against Real Madrid because they were in the same group. Barcelona can also not be drawn against Real Madrid because they are both La Liga teams. However, Real Madrid and Manchester City could potentially be drawn against each other in the round of 16.

The first legs of the round of 16 will be held over four days. The first two games of the round of 16 will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with the next two games being played on the following day. The following Tuesday, Feb. 20, the next two games will be played, with the first leg of the round of 16 concluding on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

The second leg will be held over four days beginning on Tuesday, March 6 and concluding on Wednesday, March 14. The teams that won their groups will host the second leg, while the runners host the first leg.

Eight teams have qualified for the round of 16 ahead of the final group stage games. Barcelona, Manchester City, Besiktas, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have already qualified. Barcelona, City, Besiktas, and Tottenham won their group and will be seeded during the round of 16 draws.
