Napoli travel to the Netherlands to play Feyenoord on Wednesday in a must-win Champions League match for the Italians — while also hoping Shakhtar lose to an already-qualified Manchester City — if they want to reach the round of 16.

While Napoli lost to Juventus this past Friday for their first Serie A defeat of the 2017-18 campaign, the Partenopei need to regroup and take it to a Dutch side that has yet to amass a point in the Champions League. Napoli had previously defeated Feyenoord 3-1 in Naples on matchday 2.

Led by striker Dries Mertens, Napoli are capable of winning on the road, but they’ll need a little help from Manchester City. Should the results align for the Italian club at the 52,000-seat Stadion Feijenoord in Rotterdam, Napoli would finish second in Group F and advance. It would mark a dramatic turnaround for a team that have excelled domestically, but have had some trouble in Europe’s premier club competition following an opening day loss to Shakhtar and twin losses to Manchester City.

Reaching the final 16 remains difficult for Napoli even though their roster is loaded with players who have experience at international level like goalkeeper Pepe Reina and striker Jose Callejon. Should the team crash out of the Champions League, however, it would allow for Napoli to focus on the trophy they really want to capture this season, the Scudetto.

In doubt for the match is striker Lorenzo Insigne. He limped off the field in the 1-0 loss to Juventus, something Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri confirmed after the game had been the result of a recurring groin inflammation that the winger has suffered since last month. There’s still a chance Insigne may start the match on the bench as a sub. Sarri said Insigne’s inclusion in the starting lineup remains a game-day decision.

Should Insigne not start, Sarri may opt to use a 4-4-2 rather than a 4-3-3, giving more weight to midfielders Marek Hamsik and Jorginho to push forward and aid the attack more so than usual. While Feyenoord are beatable, Napoli don’t have a deep bench. Insigne represents their most dynamic and creative player. Without him, Napoli’s options are limited. Injuries to striker Arkadiusz Milik, again sidelined for a large portion of the season after the Poland star underwent a knee operation earlier this season, and the absence of left-back Faouzi Ghoulam has left Napoli having to go with their regulars for this stretch of the winter.

Feyenoord come into the game looking to play the role of spoiler before its home fans. Winners this past Saturday against Vitesse (a 1-0 victory), Feyenoord are currently fifth in the Eredivisie. City won the group after defeating Feyenoord last month. The Dutch team have just a point in the Champions League and will finish fourth no matter what the outcome of the Napoli game.
