Ranking the most dominant Heisman campaigns of the last 25 years
4. Jameis Winston
The youngest player in college football history to ever win the Heisman Trophy did so in impressive fashion, dominating the 2013 race to a degree that has been rarely matched over the past 25 years.
Rated as the nation’s best dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2012, Winston committed to play football at Florida State rather than joining the Texas Rangers. After taking a season to redshirt behind EJ Manual, Winston was quickly named Florida State’s starter ahead of the 2013 season.
Winston put together a terrific debut against Pittsburgh by completing 25-of-27 passes for 356 yards and five total touchdowns, setting the tone for a prolific season. The Seminoles won the final BCS National Championship Game thanks to Winston, who racked up 4,057 passing yards with 40 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.
While only one other freshman, Johnny Manziel, had ever won the award, there was never much of a doubt after Winston’s terrific debut. Voters rewarded Winston with 668 first place votes en route to a 1,499-point romp over Alabama’s A.J. McCarron and Jordan Lynch of Northern Illinois.
Winston’s 2013 Heisman campaign is the very definition of dominant and will live on as one of the most impressive runs to the award ever, particularly given the fact that he was just 19 years old.
