John Dorsey is the new Cleveland Browns GM

The Cleveland Browns sure acted fast. They already replaced former general manager Sashi Brown by hiring John Dorsey on Monday night.

The Cleveland Browns are full steam ahead… to the 2018 NFL Draft. They might be 0-12 on the season and just fired former executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown and his staff, but they have already found a GM replacement: former Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey.

The Browns fired Brown Thursday and picked up an excellent replacement in the free agent Dorsey. Dorsey was let go by the Chiefs in the summer shortly after the 2017 NFL Draft. He had been with Kansas City since the 2013 NFL season. Before that, Dorsey cut his teeth in the front office with the Green Bay Packers under the tutelage of legendary executive Ron Wolf.

This is an outstanding hire for the Browns. Cleveland normally gets C-level talent in terms of coaches and front office executives because it can’t get out of its own way. Owner Jimmy Haslam has stated that head coach Hue Jackson will be back in 2018, despite only having one win with the team in nearly two full seasons.

The idea is that Jackson and Brown had major issues in evaluating quarterback talent. Jackson supposedly wanted Cleveland to draft Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State in 2016 and Deshaun Watson out of Clemson in 2017. Instead, Brown opted to trade back.

Jackson wanted the Browns to trade for his former backup quarterback when he was the offensive coordinator for the rival Cincinnati Bengals in A.J. McCarron before the 2017 NFL trade deadline. Instead, Brown and his staff went home early and didn’t file the paperwork for the reported McCarron trade.

Frustrations boiled over and now Brown is out of a job. This is the first season in who knows how long Dorsey hadn’t been in the NFL. He would have been one of the best free agent general managers heading into the offseason, but he looks to be all in with Cleveland. Together, he and Jackson must find the next franchise quarterback for the Browns. It’s been over 25 years since Bernie Kosar got benched.
