To celebrate the release of the latest episode in the epic space opera, we take a look at each of the nine Star Wars films to find their proper historic NBA comparisons.

Mythologist Joseph Campbell identified the Hero’s Journey as a narrative pattern appearing across time and genre. The 12 stages of the hero’s journey can be found in ancient storytelling, drama, myth, religious ritual, and psychological development.

The first Star Wars film famously used the template to tell its story. But the pattern makes for compelling narrative wherever we look, including the world of basketball.

From humble origins, a hero must encounter a call to adventure — something that will shake up their everyday environment. At first, they refuse the call, fearing the unknown. But guided by the help of a mentor they commit to the action where they face a series of enemies and tests. The hero will question themselves, face their greatest fear, find their resolve, sacrifice themselves for their goal, and return home reborn.

It is easy to find these plot points in the stories of teams and athletes throughout history. Our favorite heroes, on the court as well as on the screen, must be tested to earn the sweetest of victories. Nothing truly great comes easy.

With this in mind we take a look at the plots, characters, and themes from each of the nine Star Wars films to find their appropriate comparison from NBA history.
