Borussia Dortmund are sixth in the Bundesliga despite not winning a game since Sept. 30. On Saturday, Dortmund host Werder Bremen at Signal Iduna Park. Bremen are in 17th place, with 11 points.
On Wednesday, Dortmund lost 3-2 to Real Madrid but were still able to qualify for the Europa League as the third-place team. Dortmund became the first team to ever qualify after picking up only two points in the Champions League group stage. Domestically, Dortmund have tied their last two games but have only three points in their last seven games. At one point, Dortmund was in first place with a five-point lead on Bayern but Dortmund now trail Bayern by 10 points. Manager Peter Bosz has tried different formations and different combinations of players but nothing has solved Dortmund’s defensive woes.
Over their last seven games, Dortmund have allowed 19 goals. However, playing a Bremen team that have scored the second-fewest goals in the Bundesliga might help solve Dortmund’s defensive problems. Offensively, Dortmund lead the Bundesliga with 34 goals, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading the club with 11 goals domestically. American Christian Pulisic will have a bigger role moving forward as winger Maximilian Philipp suffered a knee injury and will be out indefinitely.
Werder are second from the bottom despite allowing the third fewest goals in the Bundesliga. The club’s fortunes have changed since they fired manager Alexander Nouri and replaced him with Florian Kohfeldt. Under Nouri, Bremen had not won a game but have won two of their first three games under Kohfeldt. Max Kruse leads the club with four goals and could have a big game if Dortmund’s defensive mistakes continue.
