College Basketball Rankings: Projected Top 25 for Week 6
Notre Dame was another one of those teams that fell via major upset in Week 5 as the Fighting Irish weren’t able to hold off a hungry Ball State team at home. Relying on the 3-point shot might doom this team in the long-run or just lead to upsets like we saw this past week. The Irish rebounded with a win at Delaware to end the week and will likely drop just 5-6 spots.
Gonzaga’s already-tough slate of games in Week 5 looked more difficult after Washington hit the road and took down No. 2 Kansas. The Bulldogs, fresh off a home loss against Villanova, would be traveling to Seattle to face the Huskies on Sunday night. However, Mark Few’s team rebounded from its second loss of the season and took down a tough, up-and-coming Washington team on the road with relative ease.
This was a week in which Kansas had a chance to make a statement. The Jayhawks had a win over Kentucky earlier in the year, but they hadn’t really proven much through the first month. Kansas hosted Washington, losing 74-65, and then hosted No. 16 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon and couldn’t find a way to win that one either. Two losses on their own court will likely drop the Jayhawks completely out of the top-10.
Jamie Dixon’s TCU turnaround shouldn’t go unnoticed. The second-year head coach left Pittsburgh in 2016 to coach his alma mater in Fort Worth and the Horned Frogs are now serious Big 12 contenders at 10-0 on the year. One year removed from the NIT title, the Horned Frogs are poised to make the NCAA Tournament and if they play like they did against SMU and Nevada in Week 5 the rest of the way, there’s no way this team misses out in March.
West Virginia is another one of those teams that had a sneaky-good week, but no one was really paying attention due to the amount of upsets taking place. The Mountaineers finished thw week with wins over No. 15 Virginia and on the road against Pittsburgh to improve to 9-1 and Bob Huggins’ team looks to have rebounded nicely from that blowout loss to Texas A&M to start the year.
