Borussia Dortmund’s winless streak finally cost Peter Bosz his job. Following Dortmund’s loss to relegation candidate Werder Bremen 2-1, the club decided a change of manager was needed. In his place, Dortmund hired Peter Stoger for the rest of the season. Last week, Stoger was fired by last-place Koln, who he had managed since 2013.
While Bosz had early success with his 4-3-3 formation, Stoger will likely implement a 4-4-2 formation that he usually ran at Koln. Leading scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will start at striker likely alongside of Andrey Yarmolenko. American Christian Pulisic will likely shift into a midfield role playing alongside Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa. The biggest test for Stoger will be fixing a Dortmund defense that went from allowing two goals in their first seven games, to allowing 21 in their last eight games. Bosz struggled to find a solution after right-back Lukasz Piszczek suffered an injury.
Mainz enter the game in 14th place, one point above the relegation zone but were able to hold RB Leipzig to a draw in their last game. The tie ended Mainz two-game slide under manager Sandro Schwarz. Yoshinori Muto will lead the attack, looking to break down Dortmund’s vulnerable defense. Even with Dortmund struggling, they still are tied for the Bundesliga lead with 35 goals and will test Mainz’s defense. Mainz have allowed the fourth most goals this season.
