Is South Park new tonight, December 13?

The last episode of South Park ended on a pretty devastating cliffhanger. Can viewers expect a resolution with a new episode this week?

Season 21 of South Park was a bit of a roller coaster ride. At the outset, it seemed like a matter of when, rather than if, Heidi and Cartman were going to break up. But Cartman’s personality is so volatile, and he loves playing the victim whenever he can, that he simply couldn’t live with himself even though he kept talking it up.

That eventually led Heidi to become a female version of Cartman, especially once he turned her on to his diet. And even though South Park dialed back its political commentary, President Garrison remained a menacing presence all throughout the season. It culminated in last week’s episode when his approval ratings dropped to below 3 percent, and the only people who defended him were a family that was unironically named the Whites.

The rest of South Park banded together to try and kidnap him by trying to lay a Fox News trap. They eventually caught him, but he escaped — possibly with the help of the Whites. It was a pretty big cliffhanger to end on, but will it be resolved this week?

Unfortunately, the answer to that is no, since last episode was the season 21 finale. That means viewers will have to wait until next September to find out what happened to the President. It’s a cruel way to leave viewers hanging, but this is a cruel world we live in.

In its usual time slot, Comedy Central will be debuting The Fake News with Ted Nelms. Given how South Park just ended, you’ve got to wonder if that was a coincidence or not. Early reception to it has been positive, with Ed Helms admitting that it’s actually tough to come up with fake news. It could prove to be a welcome distraction to everything that’s been going on recently.

Ultimately, though, there isn’t much that can fill the void left behind by South Park. By the time it returns in late 2018, expect the writers to bring the fire like they always do.
