Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian likely out for season

After leaving Thursday night’s game, Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian is likely done for the season.

A litany of injuries during Thursday night games this year has drawn open ire from players. During Thursday night’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian left after being sacked and suffering a left shoulder injury. Brock Osweiler stepped in, and accounted for three touchdowns in a 25-13 victory for Denver.

Siemian started the season as the Broncos’ starting quarterback, before giving way to Osweiler and eventually Paxton Lynch. But he got the job back when Lynch suffered an ankle injury against the Oakland Raiders in Week 12, and may have been able to finish this season as the starter.

But it was not to be, as Siemian is likely to miss the final two games of the season.

The semantics over whether Siemian’s injury is a dislocation or a sprain means nothing. Returning before the end of the season would be next to impossible. It’s worth noting he missed a couple games last year with a left shoulder injury, and had surgery last offseason.

After a solid relief performance against the Colts, Osweiler may get the start in Week 16 against the Washington Redskins. But the idea Lynch will return to practice soon adds the 2016 first-round pick to the mix, and the Broncos probably need to get another look at him before making any concrete quarterback plans for next year.

After playing solidly in 2016, Siemian dropped off across the board this year. His 2018 roster spot with the Broncos is probably secure, in the final year of a contract that reflects he was a seventh-round pick. But if he is legitimately in the mix to earn the starting job again next preseason, or he starts games next season, John Elway has either not addressed Denver’s quarterback situation properly or a litany of injuries has hit.
