15 worst current, former and hypothetical college football bowl game names
7. TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl
What’s worse than having a random business sponsor and take center stage of your bowl game? When that business uses “.com” at the end of its name. I mean, I get that TaxSlayer isn’t exactly a household name and by promoting its website, it could generate some extra traffic and business, but TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl just sounds awful.
TaxSlayer has since wised up and dropped the “.com” from its name and is just the TaxSlayer Bowl — even dropping “Gator” from its name.
The bowl has been renamed a number of times over the span of decades, starting with just plain old Gator Bowl from 1946-85. That would have been a decent name for the bowl played in Jacksonville, Fla., but it has since been Mazda Gator Bowl, Outback Gator Bowl, Toyota Gator Bowl, Konica Minolta (also terrible) Gator Bowl and Progressive Gator Bowl.
It’s hard to pick the worst of them all, but I’m going with TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl. It had that “.com” from 2012-13 and it had a couple of solid matchups. The first was a solid game between Ohio State and Florida and the next was Mississippi State versus Northwestern. This year’s TaxSlayer Bowl will be an intriguing matchup between Mississippi State and Louisville.
