15 worst current, former and hypothetical college football bowl game names
3. Duck Commander/Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl
Wow. I mean, these two bowl game names deserve some recognition as being some of the worst in the history of college football’s postseason play. The Independence Bowl has been interestingly-named over the course of its existence since 1976.
It started with a simple name without a sponsor and it truly grew out of control. After that, it was Poulan Independence and then Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl. Since then, it’s changed eight more times, including a switch to the Duck Commander Independence Bowl back in 2014, which lasted all of a year.
It was called the Camping World Independence Bowl in 2015-16 and now it’s the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl, named after a lesser-known bar and restaurant. The current conference tie-ins are the ACC and SEC which makes for a decent game actually.
Last year’s game was a blowout in favor of NC State over Vanderbilt but the previous two were down to the wire. When it was called the Duck Commander Independence Bowl, it was arguably the best game of the bunch between Miami and South Carolina.
