15. Salad Bowl

Believe it or not, this was actually a game played from 1947 through 1955. With the game being played so long ago, it often gets swept under the rug and no one talks about just how poor of a name it was.

On top of that, it was played in Phoenix, Ariz., which is a city with very little greenery. Grass doesn’t grow much in the desert and you can bet farms aren’t flourishing with little rainfall, so the name Salad Bowl doesn’t make much sense for the area. It only lasted for eight years and it stopped inviting college football teams in 1952 and instead turned into more of an all-star game.

If this bowl was still around today, could you imagine a coach trying to fire his team up to play in the Salad Bowl? That’s about as tame of a name as you could possibly come up with. You might as well call it the Vegetarian Bowl or the Health Foods Bowl as the name likely didn’t come with much thought.

Luckily, this bowl has been extinct for 62 years and the last non-all-star and service teams to play in the contest were Houston and Dayton back in1952. The Cougars won 26-21 and the program will always be remembered as the last Salad Bowl champs — kidding, obviously.
