Borussia Dortmund picked up their first win since Sept. 30 when they defeated Mainz 2-0 in Peter Stoger’s first game as manager. The win moved Dortmund to sixth in the Bundesliga table, one spot and one point behind Hoffenheim. In their last game, Hoffenheim defeated Stuttgart 1-0.
Stoger decided to use a 4-3-3 formation that had brought Dortmund success early in the season under Peter Bosz before the team collapsed. In addition to the formation change, Stoger made three changes to the starting XI. Ömer Toprak started at center-back, Jeremy Toljan at right-back and Raphaël Guerreiro started in midfield. The moves improved Dortmund defensively, helping them keep their first clean sheet since Sept. 20. Offensively, Stoger continued to rely on the front three of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Andrey Yarmolenko and Christian Pulisic. The trio have combined for 17 of Dortmund’s Bundesliga best 37 goals.
Hoffenheim’s Mark Uth scored his eighth goal of the season to secure the win against Stuttgart. Only Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Bayer Leverkusen have scored more goals than Hoffenheim this season who are again overachieving under manager Julian Nagelsmann. With Sandro Wagner injured, Nagelsmann will rely on Serge Gnabry and Andrej Kramaric to replace Wagner. The duo have combined for six goals and five assists this season. While Hoffenheim have had success moving forward, they have struggled defensively, allowing a middle of the pack 20 goals.

Last season, Dortmund picked up four of six points against Hoffenheim. Hoffenheim held Dortmund to a draw at Rhein-Neckar-Arena in the first half of the season. However, Dortmund won the reverse fixture 2-1 at the Westfalenstadion at the end of the season, helping the club finish third, two points ahead of Hoffenheim. The loss cost Hoffenheim an automatic spot in Champions League this season, forcing them to go through the playoffs, where they lost to Liverpool.
