Stoke enter their Saturday match against West Ham, two points ahead of the Hammers. West Ham and Stoke are both relegation candidates after poor starts to the season. Stoke are 15th with 16 points, while West Ham are 19th.
Stoke dropped their Wednesday fixture 1-0 to Burnley. The loss was the Potters second straight and fourth in their last five games. Stoke’s biggest problem this season has been the club’s inability to defend. Stoke have conceded 36 goals this season, the most in the Premier League by four goals. If Mark Hughes cannot improve his club’s defense, he could be out of a job before Christmas. Offensively, the Potters have scored 19 goals, the ninth most in the Premier League. Mame Diouf and Xherdan Shaqiri have combined to score eight of Stoke’s 19 goals.
After shocking Chelsea on the weekend, West Ham were able to get a point off of Arsenal, after a scoreless draw. While the decision to hire David Moyes as manager was criticized, the former Everton and Manchester United manager has been able to get results and improve West Ham’s defense. While Moyes has improved a defense that has allowed the second most goals in the Premier League, Moyes has yet to improve the Hammers offense. Only four teams have scored fewer goals than West Ham’s 14. Javier Chicharito Hernandez leads the Hammers with four goals but the Mexican international has not scored since Oct. 28.
