College Basketball Rankings: Projected Top 25 for Week 7
Once again, Virginia is one of the top teams in the country and a dark-horse contender in the ACC. Should this surprise anyone? Probably not since Tony Bennett has been one of the best coaches in the land, but this is a team that began the year outside the Top 25, looking in. Defense has been the name of the game and they used it against Davidson in their only win of Week 6. Don’t expect much of a jump, though.
We all know TCU has been known for its football over the past decade, or so, but the basketball program is making some noise thanks to Jamie Dixon. The Horned Frogs didn’t have a game last week, though, so a jump isn’t likely, but they are still undefeated and should be treated as contenders in the Big 12. Watch out, Kansas.
Speaking of Kansas, the Jayhawks are also likely to remain at No. 13 after a shaky Week 6 showing against Nebraska on the road. While the Cornhuskers aren’t pushovers, by any means, they are also nowhere near the level of Kansas. Bill Self needs to light a fire under this team as it has been playing down to opponents recently. Could the Big 12 title streak be in jeopardy?
How good is Gonzaga? Honestly, it’s tough to tell. The Bulldogs looked unbeatable before last week but it lost to Villanova by double-digits before needing overtime in Week 6 to take down North Dakota at home. Sure, games like this happen to just about every top team, but Mark Few must make sure this doesn’t become a trend for Gonzaga moving forward.
West Virginia is one of three teams in the Top 25 that didn’t play a single game in Week 6 and the Mountaineers probably wish they did. Why? Because they’ve won nine straight games after losing the season opener to Texas A&M and Bob Huggins has them performing at a high level. West Virginia will likely remain at No. 11 this week.
