Stephen Curry unlikely to play on Christmas for Warriors

NEW ORLEANS, LA - DECEMBER 04: Stephen Curry

While he’s been out for most of December, don’t expect Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry to suit up vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers on Christmas.

Even though they aren’t in first place in the Western Conference, it’s pretty good to be the Golden State Warriors.

This team is the defending NBA champions and has won the last three Western Conference Finals. Keep in mind that they’ve gone 24-6 through 30 games, missing starting point guard Stephen Curry since Dec. 4.

It has been yet another ankle injury that has kept the Warriors’ star point guard sidelined since the first week of December. While the organization feels that Curry is progressing nicely from his ankle injury, Golden State is afraid that he probably will not be able to play on Christmas Day versus the Eastern Conference rival Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Warriors organization state that Curry “will be reevaluated in one week with the anticipation of having more clarity at that time on a potential return to game action plan.” Since Christmas is only six days away, it should be safe to say that Curry won’t play against the Cavaliers on Monday, Christmas Day.

This will be the first of two annual regular season meetings between these two rival basketball clubs. They have met the last three years in the NBA Finals. Golden State won the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2015 and 2017, with Cleveland getting its first NBA title in 2016. These two teams will meet in Cleveland on Jan. 15 in a few weeks.

While Curry’s absence might hurt ABC’s overall television numbers, it’s still the 3:00 p.m. ET game on Christmas Day. That’s prime mid-afternoon real estate during the biggest holiday of the year. NBA fans may have wanted to see Curry in action on Christmas, but that might have to wait until Christmas 2018. A healthy Curry is a better Curry, and the NBA needs his ankles to be right in April, May and June.
