UAB vs. Ohio(-7.5) at Nassau, Bahamas(2):
UAB 8-4, 6-2(t-3rd CUSA):
Wins: vs. Alabama A&M(38-7), vs. Coastal Carolina(30-23), vs. Louisiana Tech(23-22), vs. Middle Tennessee State(25-23), at Southern Mississippi(30-12), vs. Rice(52-21), at UTSA(24-19), vs. UTEP(28-7)
Losses: at Ball State(31-51), at North Texas(43-46), at Charlotte(24-25), at Florida(7-36)
Record vs. bowl teams: 3-1
UAB had a successful season after being without football for a few years. All four losses were on the road, but only one was to a decent team. I’m not sure what to think of those inexplicable losses to Ball State and Charlotte. The Florida game also surprised me since the Gators were struggling. At any rate, this season is a success for UAB no matter what happens here. Their defense is good enough to at least keep them in this game.
Ohio 8-4, 5-3(5th MAC):
Wins: vs. Hampton(59-0), vs. Kansas(42-30), at Eastern Michigan(27-20), at Massachusetts(58-50), at Bowling Green(48-30), vs. Kent State(48-3), vs. Miami(OH)(45-28), vs. Toledo(38-10)
Losses: at Purdue(21-44), vs. Central Michigan(23-26), at Akron(34-37), at Buffalo(24-31)
Record vs. bowl teams: 1-3
Ohio got their signature win against Toledo, then proceeded to lose the last two games. The Bobcats’ normally solid defense abandoned them against Akron and Buffalo, two teams that are about the caliber of UAB on offense. Ohio will likely be without leading rusher A.J. Oulette, and will need to get the ball in the hands of Papi White to keep up with UAB. Inconsistent offensive play has plagued this team at times this year, but any team that beats Toledo by 28 is a dangerous team.
Prediction:
This heavily favors Ohio on paper, but I think UAB shows up for this one. The Blazers have seemed acutely aware of how important this season is to the future of football at the university. A win here would be huge! I expect this to be a fairly low scoring game, and with the way Ohio closed the season, I’m not sure they are more than a touchdown better. I’ll take UAB and the points.
Pick: UAB
