Fifth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels just lost to the Wofford Terriers, 79-75.  At home.

The No. 5 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels just suffered their second loss of the season to the Wofford Terriers, 79-75. If you are asking where or what Wofford is, the Terriers lie in the great place of Spartanburg, South Carolina. While the school is small, theTerriers showed they had a big heart to defeat the Tar Heels on Wednesday night.

The Terriers’ shocker has a couple of ripple effects. The Tar Heels had a 23-game home winning streak coming into the game. UNC also never led throughout the game, shooting 36 percent from the floor. One could say that if the Tar Heels struggled shooting against this mid-major team, just imagine what will happen in March.

The loss to Wofford could make the Tar Heels appear as pretenders, especially with the recent track record of losses for Wofford.

"Wofford entered Wednesday’s 79-75 upset win at No. 5 North Carolina ranked 197th on KenPom.com. On Nov. 26, Wofford lost by 20 against UNC-Asheville. On Nov. 22, Texas Tech beat Wofford by 23. This is a major loss for a UNC team that can admire last season’s banner in the rafters but is still trying to find an identity after losing so many talented big men from last year’s team."

Granted, upsets happen in college basketball whether it’s in December or March. Just not usually to a team returning leadership in players like Joel Berry II and Theo Pinson. In cases such as this, the talented team came out flat and lacked execution. It doesn’t happen often, but enough to make college hoops unpredictable way before the NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels suffered a shot back to reality Wednesday night. What can they do to rebound? Only make for certain this type of basketball play doesn’t show up in March.
