Appalachian State vs. Toledo(-6.5) at Mobile, AL(4):
Appalachian State 8-4, 7-1(t-1st Sun Belt):
Wins: vs.Savannah State(-54-7), at Texas State(20-13), vs. New Mexico State(45-31), at Idaho(23-20), vs. Coastal Carolina(37-29), vs. Georgia Southern(27-6), at Georgia State(31-10), vs. Louisana(63-14)
Losses: at (15)Georgia(10-31), vs. Wake Forest(19-20), at Massachusetts(27-30), at Louisiana-Monroe(45-52)
Record vs. bowl teams: 1-2
This team goes as senior quarterback Taylor Lamb goes. Lamb is clearly the leader of the team. However, don’t sleep on junior running back Jalin Moore. Moore topped 200 rushing yards twice this year. In the last three games that he played, Moore ran for 463 yards and five touchdowns. In his other seven games he ran for 449 yards and four touchdowns. 241 and two of those were against New Mexico State.
Toledo 11-2, 8-1(1st MAC):
Wins: vs. Elon(47-13), at Nevada(37-24), vs. Tulsa(54-51), vs. Eastern Michigan(20-15), at Central Michigan(30-10), vs. Akron(48-21), at Ball State(58-17), vs. Northern Illinois(27-17), at Bowling Green(66-37), vs. Western Michigan(37-10), vs. Akron(45-28)
Losses: at (14)Miami(FL)(30-52), at Ohio(10-38)
Record vs. bowl teams: 4-2
No Kareem Hunt? No problem! Terry Swanson picked up almost where Hunt left off. How important is Swanson to this team? The senior left after just six carries in the Ohio game. Toledo proceeded to get blown off the field. This is an experienced and veteran team. This senior group has been to four bowl games in four years.
Prediction:
These two teams met last year in the Camellia Bowl. It was Appalachian State’s first ever bowl game, and they beat the Rockets by three points. However, both starting running backs from that game are gone. The quarterbacks remain though, and both Swanson and Moore are capable backs. I expect another close game due to Appalachian State’s defense, but I think Toledo’s offense is too good this year.
Pick: Toledo
