Fresno State vs. Houston(-2.5) at Honolulu, HI(2):
Fresno State 9-4, 7-2(2nd MWC):
Wins: vs.Incarnate Word(66-0), vs. Nevada(41-21), at San Jose State(27-10), vs. New Mexico(38-0), at San Diego State(27-3), vs. BYU(20-13), at Hawaii(31-21), at Wyoming(13-7), vs. Boise State(28-17)
Losses: at (1)Alabama(10-41), at (6)Washington(16-48), vs. UNLV(16-26), at Boise State(14-17)
Record vs. bowl teams: 3-3
Fresno played two top six teams early in the season, however, they weren’t able to hang with either of them. However, I do think it caused a lot of people to underestimate the Bulldogs. This team is a good offensive team led by Oregon State transfer Marcus McMaryion. His numbers were better under Jeff Tedford this season. Fresno doesn’t have much of a running game, so if you can stop the pass, they are not explosive enough to come back.
Houston 7-4, 5-3(4th AAC):
Wins: at Arizona(19-16), vs. Rice(38-3), at Temple(20-13), vs. SMU(35-22), at (17)South Florida(28-24), vs. East Carolina(52-27), vs. Navy(24-14)
Losses: vs. Texas Tech(24-27), at Tulsa(17-45), vs (25)Memphis(38-42), at Tulane(17-20)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-2
Kyle Postma and Kyle Allen both failed to unlock the potential of this offense. When D’Eriq King took over for the last four games, this offense became much better. The defense, led by Ed Oliver, is a pretty good group. That unit will be the one that decides the game.
Prediction:
Duke Catalon helps provide the balance for this Houston offense that is finally getting going. This is not an elite group like it was last year, but they are capable of keeping up with as little points as their defense allows. Fresno has had a good season. Better than any expected, actually. I just don’t think they have quite enough to take this one.
Pick: Houston
