Northern Illinois vs. Duke(-5.5) at Detroit, MI(3):

Northern Illinois 8-4, 6-2(t-2nd MAC):

Wins: vs.Eastern Illinois(38-10), at Nebraska(21-17), vs. Kent State(24-3), at Buffalo(14-13), at Bowling Green(48-17), vs. Eastern Michigan(30-27), vs. Ball State(63-17), vs. Western Michigan(35-31)

Losses: vs. Boston College(20-23), at (19)San Diego State(28-34), at Toledo(17-27), at Central Michigan(24-31)

Record vs. bowl teams: 0-4

The emergence of Marcus Childers helped this offense become better than stagnant, but the Huskies still don’t move the ball well. They thrive on defense, and in particular the defensive line. NIU came up with maybe their most impressive win in program history with a win in Lincoln earlier this season. Can they take down another power five foe?

Duke 6-6, 3-5(t-9th ACC):

Wins: vs. North Carolina Central(60-7), vs. Northwestern(41-17), vs. Baylor(34-20), at North Carolina(27-17), vs. Georgia Tech(43-20), at Wake Forest(31-23)

Losses: vs. (14)Miami(FL)(6-31), at Virginia(21-28), vs. Florida State(10-17), vs. Pittsburgh(17-24), at (13)Virginia Tech(3-24), at Army(16-21)

Record vs. bowl teams: 2-6

The Duke defense was really solid this year. Wake was the only team that scored more than 21 points on them (23). This was a good draw for Duke as they get another team that thrives on defense here. Daniel Jones showed flashes of brilliance this year, but was largely inconsistent. How he plays will affect whether Duke wins this game or not.

Prediction:

This could be the lowest scoring game of bowl season. The over/under is at 47.5, and I am taking the under. Neither team had a really prolific offense even when they weren’t playing a good defense. Duke’s win over Northwestern early in the season is likely what has pushed this line so far in Duke’s favor. It opened at 2.5, and likely should have stayed there. I think this stays within a field goal either way.

Pick: Northern Illinois
