Yes, Earl Thomas told Jason Garrett he wants the Cowboys to sign him

Earl Thomas said something to Jason Garrett after Sunday’s game and the internet went into a frenzy.

As is the case when two teams are limping towards the end of losing seasons (or one that doesn’t end in the playoffs), we need something to overanalyze. In this case, it’s what Seattle Seahawks defensive star Earl Thomas said to Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett as the two were talking after Sunday’s game in Dallas.

Initially, it was reported that Watson ran up to Jason Garrett to tell him that if the team has a chance to ‘get him’ in the offseason then they should come get him. The assumption here would be that Watson wants to play with the Cowboys next year? He has another year on his contract so that doesn’t really seem possible, however, the Seahawks will need to make tough financial decisions this offseason which could include walking away from Thomas.

Once this clip started making the rounds, some counter-reporting surfaced which seemed to soften what we initially thought was being said.

So does this mean he wanted Dez to come and fight? We’ve heard of NBA players (notably Kevin Garnett) waiting outside of the opposing team’s locker room after a game to finish business started on the court.

Ahhh, mystery solved. Thomas — who plays for a team that rarely makes a trip to Dallas — just wanted to see his buddy after the game.

BUT WAIT.

Just when we thought this was nothing, Thomas himself confirmed that what he meant was exactly what we initially thought. Watson wasn’t asking to be cut by the Seahawks, rather he indicated that when they kick him to the curb (a very specific phrasing), the Cowboys need to scoop him up:

Don’t sleep on this idea coming to fruition, as Watson is deep enough into his career to be a cap casualty this summer. He could also have inside information that the greater football public doesn’t know regarding his souring relationship with the team. Also, lest we forget that when Richard Sherman rumors were picking up last offseason the Cowboys were the team pegged to land him.

Cutting Thomas before June 1st would save the Seahawks $6.6 million dollars — all of which they really need — and moving on from Sherman saves a whopping $11 million. There’s doubt that Sherman is healthy enough to start next season and the rumblings about Seattle moving on from him have been brewing for a while. A team as cash-strapped as the Seahawks could use $16 million, especially if it wants to swap out Thomas and Sherman to retain Sheldon Richardson.
