Iowa(-2.5) vs. Boston College at New York, NY(3):
Iowa 7-5, 4-5(t-7th Big Ten(14):
Wins: vs. Wyoming(24-3), at Iowa State(44-41), vs. North Texas(31-14), vs. Illinois(45-16), vs. Minnesota(17-10), vs. (6)Ohio State(55-24), at Nebraska(56-14)
Losses: vs. (4)Penn State(19-21), at Michigan State(10-17), at Northwestern(10-17), at (8)Wisconsin(14-38), vs. Purdue(15-24)
Record vs. bowl teams: 4-5
Akrum Wadley and James Butler form a very good running back duo, but the ineffectiveness of Nathan Stanley hampered this team at times, particularly on the road. The Hawkeyes also don’t have playmakers at receiver like they have in past years. That resulted in a one dimensional offense in many of the games this year. Wisconsin and Iowa State were the only teams to top 24 points on this defense.
Boston College 7-5, 4-4 (t-5th ACC):
Wins: at Northern Illinois(23-20), vs. Central Michigan(28-8), at Louisville(45-42), at Virginia(41-10), vs. Florida State(35-3), vs. Connecticut(39-16), at Syracuse(42-14)
Losses: vs. Wake Forest(10-34), vs. Notre Dame(20-49), at (2)Clemson(7-34), vs. (16)Virginia Tech(10-23), vs. (23)North Carolina State(14-17)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-5
The first ten games for Boston College were against Bowl teams, so their schedule and stats aren’t padded. I don’t think this team is quite as explosive with Anthony Brown out, but Darius Wade was solid in his stead. The strength of this team is AJ Dillon and the running game, and that stifling defense. After the Louisville game, the Boston College defense gave up just 60 points in the last five games.
Prediction:
These are two similar teams. They both run the ball well and play good defense. I think the presence of Nevada transfer James Butler kept Wadley fresh, but it also kept him from getting into a groove at times. Boston College is clearly the better team, but the loss of Anthony Brown has me questioning this. However, Iowa played poorly on the road for much of the season. This is closer to a road game, and it is Boston College’s second game in a baseball stadium this year. That counts for something!
