Virginia vs. Navy(EVEN) at Annapolis, MD(3):
Virginia 6-6, 3-5 (t-9th ACC):
Wins: vs. William And Mary(28-10), vs. Connecticut(38-18), at Boise State(42-23), vs. Duke(28-21), at North Carolina(20-14), vs. Georgia Tech(40-36)
Losses: vs. Indiana(17-34), vs. Boston College(10-41), at Pittsburgh(14-31), at Louisville(21-38), at (3)Miami(FL)(28-44), vs. (25)Virginia Tech(0-10)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-5
Virginia closed the season losing five of their last six games. After the huge win in Boise, this offense went downhill. The defense is still pretty solid, but their lack of a good running game hurts. Jordan Ellis ran for 80 yards or more in all but the Indiana game in the first half of the season. He has not ran for more than 60 since the North Carolina game. It’s no coincidence that that is why the offense is stumbling.
Navy 6-6, 4-4(t-5th AAC):
Wins: at Florida Atlantic(42-19), vs. Tulane(23-21), vs. Cincinnati(42-32), at Tulsa(31-21), vs. Air Force(48-45), vs. SMU(43-40)
Losses: at Memphis(27-30), vs. (20)Central Florida(21-31), at Temple(26-34), at (8)Notre Dame(17-24), at Houston(14-24), vs. Army(13-14)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-6
Navy also stumbled down the stretch. After starting 5-0, the Middies lost six of their last seven games. It’s not that Navy can’t pass. They just usually don’t have a reason to. Navy relies on limiting possessions of the opposing team, but given the struggles of the Virginia offense, it may not matter if they do or not.
Prediction:
This is a home game for Navy, the second team to get a home bowl game so far. FAU dominated the Boca Raton bowl. Will Navy do the same? The key to this is going to be whether Navy can stop Kurt Benkert or whether the Hoos can stop the option. Virginia allowed 178.3 yards per game on the ground, which is 78th in the country. So how do you pick two struggling teams? By seeing who has the biggest weakness. Navy doesn’t really have a glaring weakness. Virginia’s weakest spot is run defense. In that sense, this is one of the worst draws Virginia could get in a bowl game.
Pick: Navy
