Bowl season got off to a tough start, but I have improved lately. Next up is the Camping World Bowl. (22)Virginia Tech vs. (19)Oklahoma State(-5.5) at Orlando, FL(3):

Virginia Tech 9-3, 5-3 (4th ACC):

Wins: vs. (22)West Virginia(31-24), vs. Delaware(27-0), at East Carolina(64-17), vs. Old Dominion(38-0), at Boston College(23-10), vs. North Carolina(59-7), vs. Duke(24-3), vs. Pittsburgh(20-14), at Virginia(10-0)

Losses: vs. (2)Clemson(17-31), at (10)Miami(FL)(10-28), at Georgia Tech(22-28)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-2

Once again, the signature of this Hokie team was the defense. That unit posted three shutouts this year, and only allowed more than 30 points once. That was to the number one (then number two) team. That’s not to say that Virginia Tech can’t score. Josh Jackson was better earlier in the season, but he still had a strong freshman campaign. However, this is going to be tough for Virginia Tech, who is without RB Travon McMillian and WR Cam Phillips.

Oklahoma State 9-3, 6-3 (3rd Big 12(10):

Wins: vs. Tulsa(59-24), at South Alabama(44-7), at Pittsburgh(59-21), at Texas Tech(41-34), vs. Baylor(59-16), at Texas(13-10), at (22)West Virginia(50-39), at (21)Iowa State(49-42), vs. Kansas(58-17)

Losses: vs. (16)TCU(31-44), vs. (5)Oklahoma(52-62), vs. Kansas State(40-45)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-3

This might be the best offense in the country. However, for as good as the offense is, the defense is almost equally bad. This is one of the most balanced attacks around. Mason Rudolph, threw for over 4,500 yards. Justice Hill ran for over 1,300 yards. James Washington had another huge season, picking up over 1,400 yards through the air. This is a deep and experienced offense, but can they deal with that Hokie defense?

Prediction:

This is the first bowl game to feature two ranked teams, and the first of three today! The bowls are starting to get really interesting. This here is a great example. Virginia Tech has allowed the fifth fewest points in the country, and ranks 11th in total defense. Oklahoma State has the third best offense in the nation. Something has to give.

For me, the loss of McMillian and Cam Phillips is going to loom large in this one. This is the last collegiate game for both Mason Rudolph and James Washington, two of the most prolific offensive players Stillwater has ever seen. This line has adjusted, but not enough. I still like Okie State by at least a touchdown.

Pick: Oklahoma State
