(18)Washington State vs. (16)Michigan State(-1.5)(5):

Washington State 9-3, 6-3(t-4th Pac 12):

Wins: vs. Montana State(31-0), vs. Boise State(47-44), vs. Oregon State(52-23), vs. Nevada(45-7), vs. (5)USC(30-27), at Oregon(33-10), vs. Colorado(28-0), vs. (21)Stanford(24-21), at Utah(33-25)

Losses: at California(3-37), at Arizona(37-58), at (17)Washington(14-41)

Record vs. bowl teams: 5-2

The Pac 12 North was theirs for the taking until they got blown out in the Apple Cup. Washington State started the season hot, but cooled down with the weather to a 3-3 finish. Who would have thought that a Mike Leach defense would have not just one, but two shutouts in the same season! However, this team still allowed more than 40 points three times. The Cougars will be without Tavares Martin Jr, their leading receiver, for the bowl. Not like it matters in this offense. 11 receivers caught double digit passes this year.

Michigan State 9-3,7-2(t-3rd Big Ten(14):

Wins: vs. Bowling Green(35-10), vs. Western Michigan(28-14), vs. Iowa(17-10), at (7)Michigan(14-10), at Minnesota(30-27), vs. Indiana(17-9),vs. (7)Penn State(27-24), vs. Maryland(17-7), at Rutgers(40-7)

Losses: vs. Notre Dame(18-38), at Northwestern(31-39), at (13)Ohio State(3-48)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-3

The Spartans played choking defense against teams with average offenses. Just look at the Michigan and Penn State games. Teams with high powered offenses gave them trouble. Ohio State blew them off the field. Notre Dame did the same. The underrated Northwestern offense gave them fits as well. I understand that the Spartans are 9-3, but it’s a soft nine wins. Almost half their schedule was against non bowl teams. However, the Spartans did beat two top ten (at the time) teams.

Prediction:

I mentioned that Sparty had trouble with good offenses, and Washington State is about as good as it gets. Add to that an underrated Washington State front, and you get a recipe for an upset. This line opened with Wazzu favored, and should have stayed there. Michigan State only really played one good game against a good team all year. I actually think Wazzu wins by double digits.

Pick: Washington State
