(13)Stanford vs. (15)TCU(-2.5) at San Antonio, TX(2):
Stanford 9-4, 7-3(2nd Pac 12):
Wins: vs. Rice(62-7), vs. UCLA(58-34), vs. Arizona State(34-24), at (20)Utah(23-20), vs. Oregon(49-7), at Oregon State(15-14), vs. (9)Washington(30-22), vs. California(17-14), vs. (8)Notre Dame(38-20)
Losses: at(6)USC(24-42), at San Diego State(17-20), at (25)Washington State(21-24), vs. (10)USC(28-31)
Record vs. bowl teams: 6-4
Stanford really took off once K.J. Costello took over at quarterback. What this team accomplished, particularly RB Bryce Love, this year was phenomenal. Love ran for nearly 2,000 yards despite running for two thirds of the season basically on one leg. Unlike his predecessor, Love is reportedly playing in the bowl game. This will likely be his last college game, though if he does come back, Love is the favorite for the Heisman. He finished second this year.
TCU(10-3, 7-3 (2nd Big 12(10):
Wins: vs. Jackson State(63-0), at Arkansas(28-7), vs. SMU(56-36), at (6)Oklahoma State(44-31), vs. (23)West Virginia(31-24), at Kansas State(26-6), vs. Kansas(43-0), vs. Texas(24-7), at Texas Tech(27-3), vs. Baylor(45-22)
Losses: at (25)Iowa State(7-14), at (5)Oklahoma(20-38), vs. (3)Oklahoma(17-41)
Record vs. bowl teams: 6-3
TCU will finally be back to full strength after playing most of November at least one man down on offense. This looked like a pedestrian offense in the Big 12(10), but they were still ranked in the top 40 nationally. The Horned Frog defense was not quite as stout as usual this season, but TCU suffered a horde of injuries on that side of the ball as well. At full strength, I am guessing that this will look more like the team that started 7-0 than the one that finished 2-2.
Prediction:
Can anyone stop Bryce Love? That is the question for this game. If anyone can, defensive guru Gary Patterson would be one of my top picks to try. Love will be healthier than he has been since September. You know, when he ran for 301 yards on Arizona State the week after hanging 263 on UCLA. That said, TCU has the fourth ranked run defense in the country. Can Stanford score enough if the Horned Frogs neutralize Love? I doubt it, so the safe pick is TCU
Pick: TCU
