To close out 2017, Loot Crate gives us several doses of spacefaring adventure and a mystery item to promote the overall brand.

Believe it or not, we’ve reached the end of another year in Loot Crate Land. That’s not a place you can visit on a map, but rather one that comes to you each month.

Along the way, we’ve gained a lot of cool t-shirts, tons of cool swag and had some surprises. We’ve also lost the Loot Crate magazine — or maybe we were the only ones left who enjoyed reading it physical form every month — though it lives on online, and even has a cool page-flipping sound when you read it.

But we’ve got one more stop to make before we rocket into 2018, and that’s with the December 2017 crate and its ā€œExploreā€ theme. The assortment of goodies this time around tackles that theme the way you’d think, but it also throws in a twist that Looters may or may not find exciting.

How’s that for a teaser? Let’s unbox this bad boy.

Actually, before we get to that, let’s give a shout to this awesome Star Wars art inside the box this month.

Now we’ll get to the unboxing …

Exclusive Destiny 2 Wonderwing T-Shirt

Some Loot Crate shirts are cool enough that they work even if you aren’t necessarily a big fan of the IP they are repping. Last month’s Voltron tee was like that, and while this Destiny 2 shirt isn’t quite as dynamic as that one, it’s one you can definitely feel good about sporting whether you dig the game or not.

It would rank as a big surprise if there wasn’t something in this box to coincide with The Last Jedi hitting theaters, and this is it. Not only is it a hefty comic (60 pages, to be exact), but it promises to tell a story that will be of interest to pretty much every Star Wars fan, exploring some of Rey’s adventures on Jakku prior to The Force Awakens. We haven’t read it yet but we can’t wait to do so.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Mini Wall Calendar by ACCO

The Guardians are favorites of Loot Crate — we saw some of them back in May, for instance — and why not? Everyone can use another pop culture calendar either at home, school or work, and the timing of this one at the end of the year is perfect.

Everything Else

Here’s where the RNG element of this month’s crate comes in, if you will. Part of the ā€œExploreā€ theme is to give subscribers a taste of Loot Crate’s other offerings, including Loot Crate DX, Loot Anime, Loot Gaming, Halo Legendary Crate, Marvel Gear + Goods, Firefly Cargo Crate and more. So everyone gets an item you might find in one of those other crates, plus a code good for 15 percent off if you want to take the monthly plunge.

More from Entertainment

A marketing gimmick? Sure. But not a bad one, and it’s understandable the company might want to expose standard crate subscribers to its ever broadening product offerings. We got a Shining Gundam Gunpla model, which is right up our alley (and we’re assuming is from Loot Anime), but your mileage may vary wildly with this final item.

The rocket pin is cool in a retro way, but we really like this month’s DLC, which is a 90-day free trial of Pandora Premium. Definitely a cool way to ā€œexploreā€ some more music, and it’s arguably the most universally useful item of the month.

Value Proposition

We’ve said this a couple times in 2017, but this isn’t necessarily the kind of crate that takes yourĀ  breath away as soon as you open it, maybe because there’s no Pop like last month or other similar collectible. Two of the items, the comic and the calendar, are flat, so there’s nothing that literally jumps out at you.

That said, the value is solid as always, with just the shirt, comic and calendar easily worth more than what you paid for the crate. Pandora Premium is a few bucks a month as well if you choose to take advantage of the DLC offer, and if you like the random item, that puts this shipment over the top.

All told, not a bad way at all to close out the year. We’re already looking forward to 2018 loot, for sure.

Disclosure: FanSided was provided with a free December 2017Ā Loot Crate box for the purposes of this review.
