Iowa State at (20)Memphis(-3.5)(2):

Iowa State 7-5, 5-4 (t-4th Big 12(10):

Wins: vs. Northern Iowa(42-24), at Akron(41-14), at (3)Oklahoma(38-31), vs. Kansas(45-0), at Texas Tech(31-13), vs. (4)TCU(14-7), at Baylor(23-13)

Losses: vs. Iowa(41-44), vs. Texas(7-17), at West Virginia(16-20), vs. (15)Oklahoma State(42-49), at Kansas State(19-20)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-5

Kyle Kempt was a third stringer going into the Oklahoma game, then was forced into action because of injury during that game. It turned out pretty well for him as Iowa State pulled off the first of two upsets of top five teams for the Cyclones this year. They stumbled down the stretch, but this is still a team that has a lot of offensive firepower and plays well on defense. David Montgomery is a go for this game. The Cyclones struggled after he exited the Kansas State game. The wild card could be WR Allen Lazard. He is the best receiver you have never heard of. It’s been a fun four years watching him.

Memphis 10-2, 7-2 (2nd AAC):

Wins: vs. Louisiana-Monroe(37-29), vs. (25)UCLA(48-45), vs. Southern Illinois(44-31), at Connecticut(70-31), vs. (25)Navy(30-27), at Houston(42-38), vs. Tulane(56-26), at Tulsa(41-14), vs. SMU(66-45), vs. East Carolina(70-13),

Losses: at Central Florida(13-40), at (14)Central Florida(55-62)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-2

Riley Ferguson leads an elite offense. Memphis put up 70 points twice this season. No one else can claim that. Of course, only three other teams played both East Carolina and UConn. The Memphis defense still leaves a lot to be desired though. The only team that was able to beat this team was Central Florida…..twice.

Prediction:

Iowa State is definitely heading in the right direction, but they aren’t there yet. They showed flashes of brilliance – you can’t beat two top five teams being average – but they were unable to sustain it over the entire season. Can they come up big here in what is essentially a road game? They certainly have the defense to do so. I think Iowa State is more tested, and they have proven that they can beat good teams on the road.

Pick: Iowa State
