(11)Washington vs. (9)Penn State(-2.5) at Glendale, AZ(2):
Washington 10-2, 7-2 (3rd Pac 12):
Wins: at Rutgers(30-14), vs. Montana(63-7), vs. Fresno State(48-16), at Colorado(37-10), at Oregon State(42-7), vs. California(38-7), vs. UCLA(44-23), vs. Oregon(38-3), vs. Utah(33-30), vs. (13)Washington State(41-14)
Losses: at Arizona State(7-13), at Stanford(22-30)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-2
Washington’s young defense struggled early in the season, but the offensive struggles, especially against Arizona State, are the things that concern me. Jake Browning almost looks to have regressed since leading this team to the playoff last year. Myles Gaskin was his normal explosive self, and Dante Pettis still has game changing speed. The question here is whether the defense can hold up against Barkley.
Penn State 10-2, 7-2 (t-3rd Big Ten(14):
Wins: vs. Akron(52-0), vs. Pittsburgh(33-14), vs. Georgia State(56-0), at Iowa(21-19), vs. Indiana(45-14), at Northwestern(31-7), vs. (19)Michigan(42-13), vs. Rutgers(35-6), vs. Nebraska(56-44), at Maryland(66-3)
Losses: at (6)Ohio State(38-39), at (24)Michigan State(24-27)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-2
A little of the luster wore off after they gave away the Ohio State game. The Michigan State game was arguably the longest game of the season with a huge weather delay. After the game resumed, Michigan State took it to them. There were games when Barkley completely disappeared from the offense. Barkley had just 142 yards in three games during the middle of the season.
Prediction:
If Washington can shut down Barkley, they have more than a puncher’s chance here. Trace McSorley had a really good year, but he and Browning are a wash. It will come down to who can stop the opposing running back. Both of these defenses are pretty solid, but they gave up some big plays at bad times. The four losses combined by these two teams were by a total of 18 points. Penn State’s were by four. They are a couple of plays away from being in the playoff. Is Penn State really happy with a consolation prize? What about Washington after making the playoff last year? I think Washington is less distracted, but it’s close.
