Newcastle and Brighton were promoted last season. After 20 games, only three points separate 12th place Brighton and 15th place Newcastle. On Saturday, Dec. 30, Newcastle host Brighton at St. James’ Park as both teams look to create separation from the relegation zone.

Newcastle lost 1-0 to Manchester City on Wednesday, a surprising result given City’s dominance this season. However, the Magpies have struggled since the end of October. Over their last 11 games, Newcastle have won only one game and have just four points. The slide has seen the Magpies go from seventh to as low as 18th in the table. Rafa Benitez’s team have allowed 30 goals this season, the seventh most this season. Against a weaker Brighton offense, the Magpies could begin to right the ship and build on holding City to only one goal.

Much like Newcastle, Brighton have struggled lately. Over their last nine games, the Seagulls have only one win and six points. In their last game, manager Chris Hughton opted to start Glenn Murray and Pascal Groß on the bench. Both players would come off the bench in the second half but the Seagulls lost 2-0 to Chelsea. Murray leads the Seagulls with five goals, while Groß has scored four times and added five assists. However, the rest of the Brighton roster have combined for only six goals. The 15 goals the Seagulls have scored are the third fewest in the Premier League.
