The Premier League kicks off action for the first time in 2018 as Brighton hosts Bournemouth on Monday, Jan. 1. Both Brighton and Bournemouth are in the bottom half of the table, looking to avoid the relegation zone and a potential drop.

Brighton struggled over their last nine games heading into their final game of 2017 against Newcastle. Chris Hughton’s side has won only one of their previous nine games and have just six points. Offensively, Glenn Murray and Pascal Groß have been the best players for the Seagulls. Groß has been a bargain signing for Brighton, scoring four goals and adding five assists, while Murray leads the Seagulls with five goals after the first 20 games of the season.

After blowing a late lead against West Ham, Bournemouth had to settle for a 3-3 tie on Boxing Day. Ahead of the Cherries final game of 2017 against Everton, Bournemouth have only four points in their previous eight games. Through the first 20 games of the season, Eddie Howe’s team has struggled defensively, allowing the fourth-most goals in the Premier League. Offensively, the Cherries have also struggled, ranking in the bottom third of the league in goals, with Callum Wilson leading the club in scoring. Bournemouth’s struggles offensively can be attributed the struggles of Jermain Defoe and Joshua King. The duo combined for 31 goals last season but have combined for only five in the Cherries first 20 games.
