Bears to hire Matt Nagy as head coach

The Chicago Bears wasted very little time in finding their new head coach. They announced on Monday that Matt Nagy will take over for the Bears.

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a heart-wrenching defeat at the hands of the Tennessee Titans this past Saturday and now stand to lose a part of their coaching staff as well. The Chicago Bears are set to name former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their new head coach, per Adam Jahns of the Chicago Tribune.

Nagy continues the trend of young coaches who shoot up through the ranks to take their first shot at being a head coach. He’s a mere 39 years old and broke into NFL coaching record in 2008 as an intern for the Philadelphia Eagles. Most recently, he was the play caller for the Chiefs in the later part of the season.

Even though the season didn’t end well for Kansas City, Nagy did a very nice job pulling a career year out of quarterback Alex Smith. That could be a large part of the reason he was an attractive candidate for the Bears. They need to find the right coach to nurture the career of young quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

The first priority for Nagy is to try and help identify weapons to give Trubisky to continue to grow in the NFL. It was a rocky season for the rookie but his receiving corps was very poor throughout the season. Hopefully for Nagy, receiver Cameron Meredith can make a full recovery from a knee injury suffered last year in the preseason. After seeing what Kareem Hunt did for Kansas City, Bears fans have to have some hope that Nagy can do similar work with the running back tandem of Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen.

Chicago could be a candidate for a fast turnaround like the NFL saw from the Los Angeles Rams this past season. They have a young quarterback who needs help in the form of better players and a solid running game. It seems they followed the same playbook as the Rams in hiring a young, offensive-minded coach. It remains to be seen if Nagy can have similar success in his first season.
