It was a rough 2017 for the Houston Texans, especially after quarterback Deshaun Watson tore his ACL in practice. He does seem to be rehabbing okay in 2018.

Though it was mostly bad for the Houston Texans in 2017, it wasn’t all that bad. For the first time in franchise history, the Texans can safely say that they’ve found a franchise quarterback. Matt Schaub was good for Houston for a few years, but Deshaun Watson proved to be the real deal in his first six starts as a rookie in 2017.

Watson took over for an ineffective Tom Savage in Week 1’s blowout home loss to the division rival Jacksonville Jaguars. He would be the starter beginning in Week 2 versus the Cincinnati Bengals. Watson had the Texans looking like a playoff team, that was until he tore his ACL in practice days after a thrilling three-point road loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

So it was only natural for the Texans to crater after Watson’s season-ending injury. Houston finished with an atrocious 4-12 record, good enough for last place in the AFC South. While Houston doesn’t own its first-round pick in 2018, it was worth it to draft Watson. Just look at him now! He’s throwing the ball like a champ at the Texans practice facility on Monday.

Though the AFC South did send two teams to the 2017 NFL playoffs, we have to believe that the Texans are primed for a bounce-back year in 2018. Jacksonville has the defense and are we sure that the Tennessee Titans are good at anything? Regardless, two of Houston’s division rivals won playoff games this past weekend.

When healthy, the Texans have arguably the deepest roster in the improved AFC South. Jacksonville has the best defense, Tennessee has some great players on offense and even the Indianapolis Colts have the best quarterback in Andrew Luck.

That being said, a healed and confident Watson should be good enough to win this gauntlet of an AFC South for the third time in four years in 2018. If Watson bounces back, Houston should bounce back, too. From the looks of it, the former Clemson standout is doing just fine. Bad news for the AFC heading into 2018.
