Twitter expected memes for weeks after Georgia blew its chance for a first national title in decades.

It looked pretty good for the Georgia Bulldogs through 30 minutes of the National Championship Game. Their defense had befuddled the Alabama Crimson Tide, shutting them out and rendering quarterback Jalen Hurts completely ineffective.

Things were so desperate for Bama that coach Nick Saban turned to true freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa to start the second half. Surely, with the formidable Georgia defense and what was almost a home game for the Bulldogs, that was a recipe for disaster that would end in the school’s first national title since 1980.

Then the second half happened. The Crimson Tide rallied, because of course they did. Tagovailoa made a mistake or two, but he also made plays, and when the seconds ticked down, Alabama had a chance to win it at the buzzer.

A missed field goal gave Georgia a lifeline, and kicker Rodrigo Blankenship connected on a 51-yarder in overtime to give the Bulldogs a lead. The defense responded by sacking Tagovailoa for a big loss on first down. Then this happened:

Heartbreak doesn’t begin to describe it for Georgia fans, who had to watch a hated SEC rival snatch the championship away from them in Atlanta.

So one would think ESPN would have zoomed in and captured any number of devastated fans in the crowd in Georgia gear. it’s practically a tradition at this point.

But … not so much. And Twitter, or at least the part of it that revels in the sorrows of other fans, was not amused.

Let’s have a heart here. All of us who have followed sports for any length of time have experienced crushing defeats. It’s not fun to relive those moments, and ESPN ensured not many Georgia supporters would be immortalized in their personal time of agony.

Next: How badly did two missed calls hurt Georgia?

And Twitter, never fear: There will be more sports-related tears to celebrate soon enough.
