3. Georgia vs. Oklahoma (Rose Bowl)

  • Date: Jan. 1
  • Outcome: Georgia wins 54-48

It was a college football fan’s dream to see a game in the Playoff Semifinals like two blue blood football programs from the SEC and Big 12 like the Dawgs and Sooners. And, it was also exciting to think about the prospect of either team facing off against Clemson or Alabama.

However, the Sooners did control the pace of play for most of this game, owning a 17-point lead at the largest margin. Mayfield seemed destined to make a run to the National Championship in his senior, and Heisman-winning season with OU.

UGA’s ground game was way too much for the Sooners defense to handle. Sony Michel totaled more than 180 yards and four touchdowns, and he wasn’t even the starting running back, as Nick Chubb saw the bulk of the snaps in the backfield.

A long rushing touchdown from Michel, in the second overtime, pushed the Dawgs past the Sooners and sent them to the program’s opportunity to win its first National Championship since 1980.
